Your question was: VPS :: niftyprograms.com :: PHP

Response (Gre Newton) 27 Jun. 2008 08:29
Dear Barry,

Yes
Customer (Barry Harkcom) 26 Jun. 2008 18:51
I'm afraid that doesn't clarify anything. You've simply repeated verbatim Daniel's final sentence which I was seeking clarification on. You could try shouting I suppose and see if I get it then.

I'm uncertain what "it" refers to. Are you saying that if I do "apt-get update all" that the installed version of libmysqlclient may be the latest supported by the installed version of the OS ?
Response (Gre Newton) 26 Jun. 2008 10:53
Dear Barry,

What  was said  is If you do apt-get update all, it will probably be the latest supported for the OS too. That does clarify the issue.
Customer (Barry Harkcom) 26 Jun. 2008 08:22
Please clarify the meaning of your last sentence. Are you saying that "apt-get update all" will have no effect because all packages will show as up to date for the installed version of the OS ?
Response (Daniel L) 22 Jun. 2008 15:45
Dear Barry,

Our VPS's come with base installation of the Ubuntu OS, which comes with certain versions of certain software that are supported by the OS in a virtualised environment. The version of libmysqlclient provided on the VPS's is the one that comes with the Ubuntu OS image that Parallels provides. If you do apt-get update all, it will probably be the latest supported for the OS too.
Customer (Barry Harkcom) 19 Jun. 2008 22:24
For the record, I have never said that I believe your website to be misleading. Those were your words, not mine.

On the contrary, I believe your website be to clear and unequivocal:-
"MySQL 5.0 Databases. Database management: PHP MyAdmin"

I believe it was reasonable for me to expect to be able to administer MySQL v5 database functionality from PHPMyAdmin immediately upon delivery of my VPS.

It is now over two months since I raised this issue with.
It is nearly 36 hours since I was told i would shortly receive a response from you.
Response (Gre Newton) 18 Jun. 2008 10:57
Dear Barry,

Thank you for your email

My manager will respond to you shortly in relation to your question below thank you for your patience

You pint is that you cannot use mysql v5 functionality with phpmyadmin because the version of libmysqlclient configured with phpmyadmin only allows functionality up to version 4.1.15 mysql. you suggest that libmysql client should be of a version that works with mysql v5.0.22  You suggest that because it doesn't are website is misleading and that it is are responsibility to install it.
Customer (Barry Harkcom) 17 Jun. 2008 21:20
Please advise me of the progress you have made in dealing with my issue.
Response (Gre Newton) 08 May 2008 08:59
Dear Barry,

Please be assured it is still being dealt with.
Customer (Barry Harkcom) 07 May 2008 11:44
Please tell me why this issue is showing as "Solved" when it is anything but. Did I miss something ?
Response (Gre Newton) 05 May 2008 11:19
Dear Barry,

Please rest assured that the matter is being fully investigated and will thus take time to get a fulsome response.
Customer (Barry Harkcom) 05 May 2008 10:40
It took 9 days and 7 separate support staff for you to be able to "summarise" the issue I raised quite succinctly in point 2 of my e-mail to you on 16th April 2008.

It has now been a further TEN DAYS since I last heard from you on this matter, despite it being given the status of "escalated".

I would like to know,  does your company consider this to be acceptable customer service ?
Response (Gre Newton) 25 Apr. 2008 13:13
Dear Barry

Thank you for your email

If I can summarise the issue as you see it.
You say that you cannot use mysql v5 functionality with phpmyadmin because the version of libmysqlclient configured with phpmyadmin only allows functionality up to version 4.1.15 mysql. You suggest that libmysql client should be of a version that works with mysql v5.0.22. You also suggest that because you say it doesn't are website is misleading and that it is are responsiblity to install it to give you that functionality ie upto  mysql v5.0.22.
I have passed the issue to a Team Manager who will have your concerns investigated I would ask for your patience in this so as to allow for the matter to be fully investigated.
Customer (Barry Harkcom) 24 Apr. 2008 20:35
The VPS information provided on your website quite clearly states that phpMyAdmin is provided as the database management software for MySQL v5 databases.

This is not the case. As my VPS is currently configured, it is not possible to use MySQL v5 functionality from phpMyAdmin because the client library being used to communicate with MySQL v5 is out of date and does not "understand" MySQL v5 syntax.

I am under no obligation to upgrade any software on my VPS to bring it in line with what your advertising states I have already purchased. It is your responsibility to provide what you said you were selling me.
http://www.webfusion.co.uk/virtual-private-servers/fusion-value-linux/

As such, your company is currently in breach of contract.

Kindly provide me with a VPS on which MySQL v5 database functionality can be managed from phpMyAdmin.
Response (Greg D) 24 Apr. 2008 20:23
Dear Barry,

Thank you for your support request on the 24th of April 2008.

The software installed is what is provided with Plesk.

If you wish to upgrade any part of your system you do have the ability to do so.
Customer (Barry Harkcom) 24 Apr. 2008 19:59
The DBWebAdmin icon works fine in Internet Explorer 7 and opens a pop up window containing phpMyAdmin. You need to allow my control panel to open pop up windows in your browser.

The customer image on which my VPS is based does not provide MySQL v5 database maintenance from phpMyAdmin, contrary to what your VPS advertisement states. It appears to be configured to use the wrong version of libmysqlclient.
Response (Greg D) 24 Apr. 2008 19:36
Dear Barry,

Thank you for your support request on the 24th of April 2008.

When you click on DBWebAdmin the screen simply refreshes itself.
Can you please confirm exactly how you are using PHPmyAdmin?

Our servers are built on a customer image which contains software that we know to be stable together.
This software can be updated as you have full root access but as was stated before these servers are unmanaged and so we do no offer any support unless the server is down.
Customer (Barry Harkcom) 24 Apr. 2008 19:16
My VPS came with phpMyAdmin v2.8.2.4 installed.
Its still installed. It still works.
No re-installation required. No server rebuild required.
The steps I outlined at 10:44 on the 20th April for you to follow still work.

As stated on previous occasions, phpMyAdmin is communicating with MySQL through a version of libmysqlclient which is reported in phpMyAdmin as exposing MySQL functionality up to v4.1.15. It should be using the version of libmysqlclient which came with the installed version of MySQL v5.0.22 so that MySQL v5 functionality can be used from phpMyAdmin.

This incident is now over 8 days old.

I look forward to hearing from you.

And my name isn't James.
Response (Alan C) 24 Apr. 2008 14:25
Dear James

Thank you for your e-mail dated 21st April 2008.

Our servers come with PHP MyAdmin installed, it would appear as though PHP MyAdmin has been removed from your server.
We would only be able to replicate and investigate your query with PHP MyAdmin on the server.
You are able to install PHP MyAdmin yourself, or you could request a server rebuild via your control panel.
Customer (Barry Harkcom) 21 Apr. 2008 16:44
Please let me know what progress has been made in the last 23 hours in understanding the issue that I have raised with you.

If you genuinely do not understand what the issue is I will do my utmost to find another way to explain it.

Thank you.
Customer (Barry Harkcom) 20 Apr. 2008 17:36
What utter rubbish !
There is no MySQL v5 DDL in your reply.

Try running this against your test database:-
CREATE PROCEDURE `mydomains_proc`(IN inName VARCHAR(60))
   NOT DETERMINISTIC
   CONTAINS SQL
   SQL SECURITY DEFINER
   COMMENT ''
BEGIN
 INSERT INTO mydomains_test (username) VALUES (inName);
END;

Stored procedures were introduced in MySQL v5.
The above DDL will fail because of syntax errors.

Please have someone investigate this issue who has even the slightest clue what I'm talking about....

phpMyAdmin is using an old version of libmysqlclient to communicate with MySQL.
So although I have a MySQL v5 DBMS installed, and phpMyAdmin v2.8.2.4 supports MySQL v5, only MySQL syntax up to v4.1.15 can currently be entered into phpMyAdmin.
Response (Sebastian N) 20 Apr. 2008 16:00
Dear Barry,

Thanks for your email dated 20th of April 2008.

I have created this table in a test database mydomains_test in PHPmyadmin;

"
Table mytest has been created. SQL query:CREATE TABLE `mytest` (
`id` INT UNSIGNED NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY ,
`username` VARCHAR( 60 ) NOT NULL ,
`password` VARCHAR( 60 ) NOT NULL
) ENGINE = MYISAM ;
"

Confirmed In ssh;

"
mysql> use mydomains_test
Reading table information for completion of table and column names
You can turn off this feature to get a quicker startup with -A

Database changed
mysql> SHOW TABLES;
+--------------------------+
| Tables_in_mydomains_test |
+--------------------------+
| mytest                   |
+--------------------------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)
"

This shows that the version of phpMyAdmin phpMyAdmin - 2.8.2.4 supports the version of Mysql on your VPS  - MySQL - 5.0.22-Debian_0ubuntu6.06.9-log.  Please check the test database mydomains_test to confirm this yourself and afterwards delete it;

password test1234

If you have any other questions or problems, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Customer (Barry Harkcom) 20 Apr. 2008 10:44
Thanks Ahmed.
The user name is blah.
The password is blahblahblah.

1. In the Plesk control panel go to Server, Database Servers.
2. Select "local MySql Server".
3. Go to the Databases tab.
4. Click on "DB WebAdmin"

PhpMyAdmin will be displayed.

5. In the top left of the display, in bold, you can see that MySQL v5.0.22 is installed.
6. In the top right of the display, in bold, you can see that this is PHPMyAdmin v2.8.2.4.
7. Below that it says "MySQL Client Version: 4.1.15".

This means that PHPMyAdmin does not have access to any MySQL functionality later than MySQL v4.1.15.
All my database scripts which contain MySQL v5 functionality, such as creating stored procedures, fail in PHPMyAdmin.
Response (Ahmed Y) 19 Apr. 2008 23:45
Dear Barry,

Thank you for your e-mail dated 19th of April 2008.

The System Engineers confirmed that phpmyadmin works with mySQL v5.

Could you please confirm the Plesk login details and how we can replicate the issues you are reporting using phpMyAdmin with mySQL v5
Customer (Barry Harkcom) 19 Apr. 2008 12:27
Thank you. The problems with the node appear to have now been resolved.
Will someone now be continuing to investigate my issue with PhpMyAdmin as Adhmed said ?
Response (Anisha L) 19 Apr. 2008 12:19
Dear Barry,

Thank you for your email dated the 19th April 2008.

The node you are hosted on is currectly down. Out Datacenter are investigating the issue to get it resolved quickly and efficiently.

Customer (Barry Harkcom) 19 Apr. 2008 10:17
Thanks Ahmed.
The password is blahblahblah

However, I now have a further problem in that I started a backup yesterday evening from the Virtuozzo panel and now that panel, the Plesk control panel and my entire website and not responding. How long should a backup take ?
Response (Ahmed Y) 19 Apr. 2008 05:36
Dear Barry,

Thank you for your e-mail dated 18th of April 2008.

Could you please confirm the login Password for Virtuozzo and Plesk Control Panel so we can investigate this further.
Customer (Barry Harkcom) 18 Apr. 2008 21:57
My VPS came with MySQL v5.0.22 already installed, as stated previously.
However, I cannot use MySQL v5 from PHPMyAdmin because PHPMyAdmin is using MySQL client v4.1.15.
Therefore, all MySQL v5 functionality is unavailable in PHPMyAdmnin.
Response (John OK) 18 Apr. 2008 21:49
Dear Barry,

Thank you for your email dated 18th April 2008.

Our website does say that MySQL is installed it makes reference to it because it is compatible with the server.

If you want MySQL v5 then you can install it and use it with phpmyadmin.

If you have any further queries or questions, then please do not hesitate to contact us.
Customer (Barry Harkcom) 18 Apr. 2008 19:58
Please note, I do not have an issue with which version of PHP is installed. According to PHPMyAdmin, PHP v5.0.22 is installed.
Please note, I do not have an issue with which version of PHPMyAdmin is installed, unless v2.8.2.4 doesn't support MySQL v5.
My issue is the version of the MySQL *client* that PHPMyAdmin has been configured to use.
Your website quite clearly states that MySQL v5.0 databases are installed and that PHPMyAdmin is provided as the database management software. By implication, this means that I can maintain the installed MySQL v5.0 databases using the provided installation of PHPMyAdmin. On my VPS, this is patently not true as PHPMyAdmin is configured to only support MySQL v4.1.15. As such, the VPS has not been delivered to me in accordance with what your website implies.
Please advise.
Response (John OK) 18 Apr. 2008 19:05
Dear Barry,

Thank you for your support request on the 18th of April 2008.

Please note our website doesn't make any mention of what version phpmyadmin it is running. In regards to PHP the VPS comes with PHP version 4 but the customer can install PHP 5.
Customer (Barry Harkcom) 18 Apr. 2008 13:18
Please note, I DO NOT have an issue with PHP.
My issue is with PHPMyAdmin which is a web-based MySQL database maintenance utility. My VPS has been delivered to me with PHPMyAdmin using a MySQL v4 client. I have paid to have MySQL v5. I cannot access the MySQL v5 functionality via PHPMyAdmin.
Response (Greg D) 17 Apr. 2008 22:24
Dear Barry,

Thank you for your support request on the 17th of April 2008.

You have full root access to upgrade or install software.

This is not something that we advise on as the servers are unmanaged.

If you wish to upgrade any of the components you will need to investigate and upgrade these yourself.
The phpupdate is a script that we provide the allow customers to install PHP 5.
Customer (Barry Harkcom) 17 Apr. 2008 20:07
Further to my previous message, why have I been instructed to run a script called phpupdate ? My issue is with PHPMyAdmin which is using a MySQL v4 client. I'm reasonably certain this is not a PHP version issue.
Customer (Barry Harkcom) 17 Apr. 2008 18:45
phpupdate is not in the /root/ directory.
This directory contains a .key file and a "psa" directory.
I have run "find / -name phpupdate" which reports that this file does not exist on my server.
Please advise.
Response (Greg D) 16 Apr. 2008 23:38
Dear Barry,

Thank you for your support request on the 16th of April 2008.

Your DNS appears correct, it may take 24-48 hours to fully propagate.

If you log in via SSH as the root and navigate to the /root/ directory you will see a script called phpupdate.

Simply run this script and it will update to PHP5.

I am unsure if it is possible to restrict the mySQL connections, as our VPS are unmanaged this would down to yourself to investigate and implement.
Customer (Barry Harkcom) 16 Apr. 2008 18:56
Hi,

I have just bought a VPS hosting account (IP address: 2xx.2xx.2xx.2xx) and I have some issues which I need to raise with you.

1. I have transferred my domain (niftyprograms.com) from a WebFusion hosting plan (IP address: 1xx.1xx.1xx.1xx). This domain is registered with 123-reg. I would be grateful if you would check that I have correctly altered my DNS settings so that this domain will eventually propogate to my VPS IP address. If I have not done this correctly please explain what I did wrong so that I can do it correctly with my other domains.

2. I have purchased a VPS account because I need PHP v5 and MySQL v5 and my old server (gooseberry) does not support them. However, if I open PHPMyAdmin from the control panel, although MySQL is v5, PHPMyAdmin is using a MySQL v4 client. As a result, all my v5 database scripts are failing. Please advise.

3. I want to be able to configure MySQL to accept connections from "localhost" and from my PC's IP address only, so that I can use EMS's "SQL Manager for MySQL" to maintain the databases on my VPS server. Unlike on my other host's control panel, I cannot see how to configure my IP address on my VPS's MySQL server. Please advise.
If this is not possible with my current hosting plan, please inform which hosting plan you provide that will allow me to configure MySQL this way.

Thanks.
Barry Harkcom.
